We suggest this long and easy mountain bike route, which runs through two of the most emblematic valleys of Cantabria: Campoo and Saja. From the mountains of Reinosa to Bárcena Mayor.
This is a very comfortable itinerary: it´s a 48 kilometers long route of which almost 43 run downhill: the other 5 that will lead us to reach the top of the Cruz de Fuentes pass.
The ride starts in Fuente del Chivo, just below the Pico Tres Mares and about 2000 meters height, where we arrive with our van and bikes: after a steady descent by bike of almost 26 kilometers by secondary mountain road, we reach Salces, having previously made a stop in Fontibre, source of the Ebro River.
From here, through secondary roads we arrive to the small village of Camino, where we take a gravel path which after one kilometer anscent deposit us at the top of Cruz de Fuentes, in the Saja-Besaya Natural Park. The views are magnificent: gentle slopes with green pastures, which quickly disappear under leafy deciduous forests.
It´s time to start an easy descent to Bárcena Mayor through a forest track of 17 kilometers long. Now we are surrounded by green mountain pastures and highly forested areas of beech and oak. The next stop take place in Pozo de la Arbencia, a beautiful hideout where two tributaries of the Saja river join to form a small network of pools and waterfalls that is well worth a visit. If the day is hot, we can take a swim in the crystal clear river Argoza: now we are so close to Bárcena Mayor, perhaps the most famous mountain village, and one of the most visited in Cantabria, thanks to its beauty and good conservation status of its typical hill-houses, cobbled streets and gastronomy.
The bike rental (plus helmet, water bottle and repair kit), transportation and accident insurance are all included in the price.
